Allscripts, Northwell Health Extend Management Services Deal

Northwell Health and Allscripts’ 15-year working relationship will now extend to 2026.

Northwell Health, New York’s largest health system, has extended its agreement with Allscripts Managed Services through 2026.

Allscripts Managed Services provides service desk support and application management services, along with supporting the health system’s infrastructure and and tools that use Allscripts technology. The service also engages in project delivery, strategic, and leadership-planning activities.

“The strong, long-standing partnership between Northwell Health and Allscripts has helped fuel our organization’s mission of improving the health of our communities,” said Michael Dowling, Northwell Health’s president and chief executive officer.

“Over the years Allscripts has been our trusted partner every step of the way, supporting us as we have grown and evolved to best meet the needs of our patients, clinicians and administrative staff. I look forward to Allscripts continuing to be a key component of the engine that drives Northwell Health’s success.”

The health system expects for Allscripts Managed Services to add an estimated $500 million to the contract backlog for the 2019 fourth quarter.

This extension follows the 2018 extension between the two companies for the Allscripts Touchworks EHR platform for its physician practice network.

It also follows the 2019 extension for the Allscripts Sunrise EHR platform. Sunrise connects all aspects of acute, ambulatory, surgical, pharmacy, radiology, and laboratory services. It also supports all core care venues across the system by delivering a single patient record, and features patient-centric capabilities that increase access and convenience, described the organization.

“Northwell Health, our largest client, is truly driven to advance the health of its community and we are honored to continue pursuing our shared vision with such a visionary leader in the healthcare industry,” said Allscripts CEO Paul Black.

“We have shared many successes over the course of our 15-year partnership with Northwell, and this extension—along with the system’s extension of its Sunrise engagement and our joint development of healthcare’s next-generation electronic health record—ensures that many more achievements are yet to come,” Black said.

Northwell Health and Allscripts have been partners since 2004 and the Allscripts Sunrise EHR platform is currently being utilized at 19 of its hospitals. The health system also uses Allscripts Touchworks at more than 700 Northwell outpatient practices that are under its umbrella.

In October 2019, Northwell and Allscripts also announced that they were developing a next-generation EHR platform to improve the experience for both clinicians and patients.

“We are excited about the possibilities that this alliance with Allscripts will generate,” said Dowling at the time of the announcement. “Coupling Allscripts’ technology expertise with Northwell’s clinical and operational strengths will enable us to create a dynamic, patient-facing tool that will arm clinicians with knowledge to provide exceptional care to our patients.”

Tested and designed by Northwell’s clinicians, technology experts, and administrators, the two companies will collaborate on a next-generation EHR that will be cloud-based, voice-enabled, and artificially intelligence-based.

“Allscripts partnership with Northwell Health has been successful for many years and, together, we are positioned to develop and launch the electronic health record of tomorrow,” Black said in October.
