Community Health Systems Taps Google Cloud Migration, Gen AI

The Google Cloud data migration aims to enhance interoperability and lay the groundwork for generative AI use cases to improve the patient experience.

Community Health Systems (CHS) has completed data migration to a Google Cloud platform to advance healthcare interoperability and generative AI deployment across its 71 affiliated hospitals.

Google Cloud's health data platform aggregates patient data in standard Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) formats, allowing CHS providers a complete view of patient medical records at the point of care.

The centralized cloud platform is also expected to help CHS gain enhanced insights into the clinical and operational metrics of the organization. For instance, CHS has access to Google Cloud's data warehouse solution to create a complete picture of patient data and generate real-time insights, including bed capacity and other operational metrics.

"The goal of this migration extends well beyond modernizing our data infrastructure," Miguel S. Benet, MD, senior vice president of clinical operations at Community Health Systems, said in a press release. "By building a secure foundation to take advantage of new innovations in AI, we're able to streamline our clinical providers' workflow and advance the way we deliver patient care."

With the centralized data repository, CHS is implementing Google Cloud generative AI technologies and large language models to streamline operational efficiencies further and improve patient outcomes.

CHS is looking to deploy generative AI for several use cases, including automating administrative tasks and distilling large amounts of complex data to improve clinical documentation.

Additionally, CHS is looking to use AI to improve the patient experience. Using Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform and capabilities with Google Maps, CHS clinicians will be able to provide outgoing patients with a list of resources in their communities customized to their social determinants of health (SDOH) needs.

"We are proud to partner with industry leaders such as Community Health Systems, who are transforming the fundamental aspects of care delivery," said Aashima Gupta, global director of healthcare strategy & solutions at Google Cloud.

"CHS is at the forefront of harnessing healthcare data to adopt a more impactful and patient-centric approach," Gupta added. "From its migration to the cloud, to its implementation of generative AI tools, Community Health Systems is taking a forward-thinking approach to how it leverages healthcare data."
