Deadline Approaching to Contest Meaningful Use Penalties

EHs have until November 30 to apply for payment adjustment reconsideration.

By Sara Heath

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a reminder regarding 2016 payment adjustments for Medicare eligible hospitals (EHs).

CMS offers these payment adjustments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), which states that all EHs, eligible providers (EPs), and Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) that do not participate in the Medicare EHR Incentive Programs may receive payment adjustments.

This payment adjustment reduces the amount an EH pays for the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) pay rate. An EH’s pay rate increases annually, and the ARRA payment adjustment application could potentially reduce the amount by which the IPPS pay rate increases.

Payment adjustment amounts vary according to the year, and 2016 payment adjustment was issued on October 1, 2015, CMS says.

However, those EHs that did not receive their payment adjustment out of error may reapply for one by the November 30 deadline. EHs can find the instructions for doing so on the CMS website.

Additionally, CMS has issued a reminder for submitting comments to Stage 3 Meaningful Use. Those comments, which are due by December 15, may be submitted via mail or electronically.
