DeSalvo Nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Health

By Vera Gruessner

Yesterday afternoon, Dr. Karen B. Desalvo, National Coordinator for Health IT, was nominated by President Obama to become Assistant Secretary for Health. DeSalvo has held the position of National Coordinator at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) since 2014 and last October was nominated as Acting Assistant Secretary for Health at HHS.

Previously, DeSalvo has held positions as Health Commisioner for New Orleans, Louisiana, according to a release from the White House. She also served as Senior Health Policy Advisor in New Orleans from the years 2011 to 2014. In addition, DeSalvo has 22 years of experience as an internal medicine doctor and professor at Tulane University of Medicine.

She has spent years working toward making public health initiatives a reality and integrating health and wellness strategies to develop an effective medical system. During her time as National Coordinator for Health IT at HHS, DeSalvo has spread the utilization of EHR systems across the healthcare sector throughout the United States.

DeSalvo led the way in developing an Interoperability Roadmap to enhance the efficient exchange of health data among EHR systems, providing patients with their health data, and protecting the privacy and security of health information.

Karen B. DeSalvo’s nomination is now on its way to the Senate for confirmation. During the Senate confirmation process, she will serve as Acting Assistant Secretary for Health as well as the National Coordinator for Health IT. The future for DeSalvo’s career will clearly impact healthcare reform around the country.
