Epic Expands Microsoft Partnership for AI-Enhanced Clinical Workflows

Epic is working with Microsoft to deploy AI solutions for clinical workflow optimization, including ambient clinical documentation technology.

Epic has expanded its partnership with Microsoft to bring artificial intelligence (AI) to healthcare at scale by deploying conversational, ambient, and generative AI technologies across clinical workflows.

The collaboration aims to expand access to AI-based administrative tools and clinical insights within EHR workflows to enhance care delivery, improve operational efficiency, and support the financial integrity of health systems.

Epic showcased several new EHR capabilities at its annual Users Group Meeting, including the integration of Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express AI technology into the Epic Hyperdrive platform and Haiku mobile application.

Hundreds of Epic customers currently leverage DAX, and access to the tool via Hyperdrive and Haiku aims to provide a seamless workflow for ambient clinical documentation.

The EHR vendor also demonstrated an AI-powered solution that provides medical coding staff with suggestions based on EHR documentation to improve accuracy and streamline coding and billing workflows.

“We are working together to rapidly deploy dozens of copilot solutions that securely unlock the potential value that the Microsoft Cloud and our AI technologies enable as health systems strive to overcome the urgent staffing, financial, and clinical access challenges they face today,” Eric Boyd, corporate vice president of AI platform at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post.

“Our work to integrate Azure OpenAI Service and Nuance ambient technologies within the Epic ecosystem shows that broader strategic collaborations can rapidly accelerate the availability of actionable AI-driven solutions for healthcare organizations and the patients they serve,” Boyd wrote.

Epic and Microsoft’s expanded collaboration will build upon recently announced EHR integrations, including Azure OpenAI Service into Epic’s EHR to automatically draft message responses. Microsoft and Nuance also recently collaborated to integrate Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience Express (DAX Express) solution into the Epic platform.
