HCA Healthcare Taps MEDITECH Expanse EHR to Drive Digital Transformation

HCA Healthcare will be going forward with a MEDITECH Expanse EHR implementation project, adding to the many joint digital transformation ventures the organizations have collaborated on.

HCA Healthcare will begin a large-scale MEDITECH Expanse EHR implementation in what the organization said is the next phase of its digital transformation journey.

The agreement between both organizations solidifies MEDITECH’s place as the preferred EHR provider of HCA Healthcare.

Currently, the healthcare system operates more than 180 hospitals and 2,300 care sites across 20 US states and the United Kingdom.

Under the contract, the Expanse platform will give providers access to a mobile user interface personalized to their workflows and clinical decision support services to improve care quality throughout the health system.

The health IT partnership between HCA Healthcare and EHR vendor MEDITECH has been a critical part of the health system’s digital transformation over the last 30 years.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with HCA Healthcare on this next chapter of their digital transformation,” Michelle O’Connor, MEDITECH president and CEO, said in a separate press release.

“MEDITECH is proud to provide a modern, integrated platform to address today's healthcare challenges and opportunities,” O’Connor added. “We believe Expanse will drive increased physician and nurse efficiencies and higher levels of end user satisfaction while allowing a continued focus on delivering a quality care experience, a hallmark of HCA Healthcare's overall success.”

Sparked by a need to improve interoperability, the health system implemented MEDITECH Expanse across three New Hampshire hospital sites—Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, Parkland Medical Center in Derry, and Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth in 2021.

“MEDITECH is a longtime partner of HCA Healthcare, and we are excited to continue working together through their next-generation software capabilities designed to better support our hospital teams and continue to improve care,” Marty Paslick, HCA Healthcare’s chief information officer, said in a public statement.

After numerous joint projects, this longtime partnership recently received recognition from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). The CHIME Collaboration Award acknowledges the years of health IT transformation and innovation.

The innovations created have led to an impact that stretches beyond HCA Healthcare, CHIME stated.

Both organizations have produced innovations with industry-wide applications, from a National Response Portal to track disease hot spots at a county and state level to digitally-enabled teamwork between pharmacists and physicians to ensure patients ensure medication management efficiency.

“We have high regard for the success of HCA Healthcare,” Helen Waters, executive vice president of MEDITECH, said. “Throughout our multiple decades of partnership, they have proven you can be both focused on quality healthcare and fiscal responsibility while driving impactful innovation.”
