Microsoft, Nuance Announce AI-Automated Clinical Documentation App

The new app from Microsoft and Nunace uses conversational, ambient, and generative AI to complete clinical documentation in seconds.

Nuance Communications, a Microsoft company, has announced Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express, the first clinical documentation application to combine conversational and ambient artificial intelligence (AI) with OpenAI's newest model, ChatGPT-4

DAX Express automatically creates draft clinical notes in seconds for clinical review and completion after each patient visit. Clinicians can also use the tool during telehealth patient conversations.

Extending the Dragon Medical portfolio of solutions and building on the market-leading DAX ambient clinical intelligence solution, DAX Express is set to reduce administrative burden and allow clinicians more time for patient care.

"Nuance and Microsoft came together with the goal of helping to digitally transform healthcare, and today we are marking the next step forward in the ongoing evolution of AI-powered solutions for overburdened care providers," Mark Benjamin, CEO of Nuance, said in a public statement. "We've taken the power and advanced reasoning capabilities of GPT-4 and integrated it into our proven outcomes-focused AI technologies in a tested and responsible way."

"Our state-of-the-art blend of conversational, ambient, and generative AI will accelerate the advancement of the care delivery ecosystem beyond what Nuance or Microsoft could have achieved separately – expanding our comprehensive portfolio of solutions that fulfill our vision to improve care quality and support enhanced outcomes for generations to come," Benjamin added.

Nuance's solutions are part of the Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare and amplified by Azure's AI-optimized cloud infrastructure.

"Microsoft and Nuance have been ahead of the curve in innovating AI solutions, and organizations large and small have long trusted our responsible, secure applications and infrastructure," said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of the Cloud and AI group at Microsoft.

"With DAX Express, we are leveraging the revolutionary capabilities of large model AI to deliver outcomes-focused healthcare applications at scale," Guthrie continued.

Nuance's Dragon Medical One, DAX, and DAX Express technologies are integrated into the EHR to support a seamless clinician experience.

DAX Express is included for users of DAX, and Dragon Medical One customers can add on DAX Express.

Officials said that DAX Express is HIPAA-compliant and developed with an approach to help create AI products that are trustworthy and safe.
