New Tools From EHR Vendor athenahealth Harness Generative AI

New generative AI tools from EHR vendor athenahealth include a care plan summarization feature, as well as a tool to draft patient case documents.

EHR vendor athenahealth has announced new generative AI-based capabilities that aim to alleviate administrative burdens and enhance patient care delivery.

The features will be available through athenaOne, the vendor’s integrated suite of EHR, revenue cycle management, and patient engagement solutions.

“For nearly a decade, we have leveraged machine learning to continuously enhance athenaOne to deliver value to our customers and their patients, automating routine tasks, streamlining critical workflows, and removing administrative burdens,” Paul Brient, chief product officer at athenahealth, said in a press release.

“The business of medicine is far too complicated,” he added. “We are focused on solving the pain points that rob providers and practices of time and revenue and divert their attention away from delivering the best possible care. Expanding generative AI capabilities across our services and solutions to complement our existing machine learning expertise will accelerate that time to value even further.”

The following generative AI tools will be available to select customers this month:

Patient Case Response Drafting

Providers on the athenaOne network respond to about four million patient cases each month. A new tool aims to boost productivity by drafting patient case responses for provider consideration, review, and editing.

Patient Record Sharing Document Summarization

Providers on the athenaOne network have access to millions of health records from across the care continuum. Sometimes, documents within these records do not have intuitive labels. A new generative AI capability that summarizes document labels is set to help providers find relevant information at the point of care.

Identification of Missing Prior Authorization Information

Payers return up to 10 percent of prior authorization tasks to providers due to missing clinical information. New generative AI capabilities will identify missing or incorrect information before the provider submits the prior authorization. The tool will also suggest the correct inclusions to maximize the chances the authorization will be approved.

Care Plan Summarization

Care managers will soon receive AI-generated “huddle reports” to prepare for weekly care meetings with providers to drive patient-centered care.
