- The wide range of hospitals and clinics across care settings and specialties investing in EHR technology have fostered a healthy amount of diversity in the inpatient EHR market.

Enterprise EHR vendors such as Epic and Cerner continue to dominate the industry year over year, but small and specialty vendors can still hold their own. The gradual increase in EHR adoption among critical access hospitals (CAHs) and specialty care facilities including behavioral and mental health have carved out a niche for health IT companies willing to focus on the unique needs of particular organizations.

While CAHs and rural hospitals are less likely than their larger counterparts to engage in advanced EHR use, a recent study found more than 80 percent of surveyed CAHs and rural hospitals have adopted at least a basic EHR system.

The following are the top 50 inpatient EHR systems based on data gathered from 7,609 hospitals by Definitive Healthcare:

Massachusetts-based Allscripts currently offers two EHR solutions – its own Sunrise EHR and the newly-acquired Paragon EHR solution. Allscripts acquired Paragon EHR after buying out McKesson’s Enterprise Information Solutions (EIS) business fall of 2017.
